Introduction to a Mechanical Engineering Major

My name is Callum Maguire, and I am a senior majoring in Mechanical Engineering. The coolest class I took last semester was AC Systems, which explored how air conditioning systems work and how they cool down rooms. Get it? Coolest class? Jokes aside, it was a very interesting course that opened my eyes to how complex a system the air conditioning in a building is, as even a single room can be a lot to deal with as far as calculations go.

I was raised on Star Wars and Tolkien, so they happen to be some of my favorite works, however I'm also very fond of superhero movies, sitcoms like Community and IT Crowd, as well as sci-fi and fantasy novels. Long story short, I'm a nerd. Best movie I've seen recently is The Last Jedi, which is something of a controversial opinion I guess, but I don't care. I enjoyed it, and that's all there is to it. I recently re-read one of my childhood favorite novels, Redwall, which was a nice trip down memory lane. It was clear that it wasn't intended to be a sophisticated kind of story, but it was still enjoyable to read and was surprisingly still engaging.

I am fan of many different kinds of music, ranging from basically anything but country and rap, and even then I make some exceptions for certain artists or songs. I grew up listening to the classic rock my dad loved, like the Beatles and Led Zeppelin, who I still listen to to this day. I also listen to classic rock bands like Pink Floyd, Queen, among others. I also have a soft spot for some artists my brothers were into when I was a kid, like Weezer and Blink-182, as well as Conor Oberst(from Bright Eyes) and Elliot Smith. Additionally I listen to a lot of modern indie music from the 2000s and 2010s, like Arcade Fire, Broken Bells, Kishi Bashi, and others. I was amazed with how much I enjoyed the musical Hamilton, as I'm usually not a huge fan of hip-hop or rap, but it's just straight awesome and worth listening to if you haven't, and an amazing experience to see on stage! Lastly, I recently began to indulge in metal, a genre I'd never really listened to, and so far I'm really liking it! It's pretty epic, and makes for good background music when you really want to get some stuff done.

I am planning on graduating this May, and I want to find a job in the local area for now. My girlfriend has three more years until she graduates from OU, so I want to stick around the OKC area until then. After that, we plan to move out to Phoenix, where she grew up. It's a fantastic city that I have really grown to like over the past couple years, visiting with my girlfriend. I'd like to find a job in the HVAC industry, designing AC systems and optimizing them to work better and more efficiently. As far as big dreams go, I'd really like to be able to see OU win another National Championship in football, preferably in person, but other than that, I don't know. I guess being able to take like a month or more and just explore Europe. Rent a car and drive cross country, visiting all of these historic places and soaking in all of the culture and art and history.

Last but not least, the pet section! I currently have two dogs, one is a miniature Schnauzer that is about 8 years old now named Ruby, and the other is a toy Schnauzer who is about to turn 1 named Rohan. They are both good dogs, and they look like spitting images of each other, despite not being related at all (and being drastically different sizes). Ruby used to have two siblings, who have since passed, who were also miniature Schnauzers, named Ringo and Roxie. My family for some reason just got this "R" thing going and it got out of hand.

  1. Nice to meet you, Callum! Thanks for sharing a little about mechanical engineering, I honestly don't know much about the field! That is pretty cool (stealing your joke here) that you got to learn about how efficient air conditioning systems work! It sounds like a challenging but fun course. Best of luck to you this semester and your sweet puppies are so cute.

  2. My husband would really enjoy talking with you about air conditioning systems, Callum! He is on a quest to create the optimum combination of air conditioning and dehumidifier technology, which is way too complicated for me, but he and his HVAC buddies always have new tricks they want to try. I'm more of the fantasy persuasion, so I would rather talk about Star Wars and Redwall... I am such a Redwall fan! Maybe you could do a project for this class in Redwall style, giving us an animal perspective/version of the epic adventures!

I am also a big fan of Arizona, as I grew up in Tucson. I hope you will get to move there as planned; it is one of the most gorgeous parts of the country IMO.

And your Schnauzers are such cuties: maybe they will make an appearance in a story that you tell for class this semester!

  3. Hi Callum, nice to meet you! It is so cool to hear that you are majoring in mechanical engineering! My sister, Noelle, is a sophomore also majoring in mechanical engineering here at OU. If you ever stop by the Multicultural Engineering/Diversity & Inclusion Office in Felgar, my sister is a student worker there and feel free to say hi to her! She loves meeting new people, and saying hi to my friends and classmates. Europe is amazing! I have been to several European countries, and the culture, history, and food are absolutely breathtaking. Good luck on your future endeavors and pets are adorable!

  4. Hey Callum, I'm glad you also enjoyed the Last Jedi, and I'm not entirely sure why it was so hated. The whole HVAC thing sounds pretty neat to me, especially in Phoenix. I've been there once or twice, and it's pretty amazing. Also, I'll probably see you at graduation, since we have the same convocation. Best of luck to you in the job hunt!

  5. Hi Callum! You have a great taste in movies! I am also a big fan of Star Wars and Lord of the Rings. I am also an AME student so I wonder if we have had any classes together. I haven’t taken any AC systems courses since I’m in the Aerospace programs, but it sounds like an interesting field. Good luck finishing school and finding a job!

  6. Hey there, Callum!

I am also graduating this spring! I have mixed emotions about finishing undergraduate, but I am looking forward to what the future holds! I also loved reading Tolkien. The Lord of The Rings, in my opinion, is the greatest trilogy of books and movies ever created. We share the same sentiment about wanting to see OU win another national championship. I thought we were going to get it done this year, but life happens. I wish you the best moving forward!

  7. Hi Callum, its always good to see other AME students. I do agree with your opinion on The Last Jedi being a good movie, it is definitely strong with the Luke, Rey, and Kylo storylines. My major gripe with it was that Finn should have died, and my minor fanboy gripe has to be that Admiral Ackbar deserved the chance to pilot the cruiser at the end, rather than just simply being an afterthought to die on the bridge. Congratulations on graduation in the spring, and best of luck on all your future plans. Its always a great feeling to be able to look ahead and at least have a general sense of what you want to do.

  8. Hey Callum! I too am graduating in the spring and couldn't be more excited. I have never read any of the Tolkien books but I do love the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit Movies. I like your music choices and since you are getting into metal, a slightly softer band to try may be Nirvana for you. If you haven't already listened to them a great amount I recommend them as well as LCD Soundsystem based on the music you said you enjoy. Good luck on your last semester!

  9. Hi Callum! Neat to see someone else who likes dadrock haha. My favorite Led Zeppelin song is 10 years gone (severely underrated!) I also agree with you that The Last Jedi was a good movie. It had a couple problems IMO (weird romance subplot and ....porgs) but I still enjoyed it a lot. Besides that, I wonder how many pets you'd have to get before you run out of pet names that start with 'R'..

  10. Hey there Callum. Congrats on graduating in the spring! I hope to see you on the field that day as well. I too am a HUGE fan of the Hobbit and Lord of the Rings trilogies. To me the Hobbit is better because of the humor and such but it is very debatable. It is really cool to see that you are perusing mechanical engineering. I always say if i could go back and do anything else then that would be the field i would go into. Well, good luck on the rest of your semester and hope to see you in May.

  11. Hi Callum! I've met quite a few mechanical engineers, but nobody who has wanted to go into the HVAC career. I've never really thought about how much work goes into creating air conditioning units efficiently, but I'm sure it's no walk in the park! When I lived in New Mexico, everything was done by swamp coolers, but obviously those would never work in a place like Oklahoma. I'd never really given much notice to the engineering that goes behind designing these systems, even having to think about the kind of area you are working in to get the best performance. Anyways, props to you for doing that because I don't think I ever could figure out all the mathematics!

  12. Hey Callum, Congratulation on this being your last semester for your undergraduate. I am also in my last semester of classes at OU just trying to make it through. I love your two dogs, Ruby and Rohan. When I was little, we had a schnauzer named Sassy. My mom had gotten her as a present for my dad when they got married. Schnauzers are the best dogs and so much fun. I do not know how Sassy was able to handle being an only dog to having to share the household with two children, but she was great with us.

  13. Hi Callum! I just want to start by saying your dogs are absolutely adorable! I had a schnauzer yorkie mix but unfortunately he ran away in my freshmen year of college not to long after I left along with my other dog Ruby. My brother is also majoring in mechanical engineering and from what I hear he enjoys it! I'm really glad you enjoy your major and are passionate about it! I like how you started the introduction with a joke it was punny! Congratulations on finishing up your last semester! I wish you the best of luck in the future!

  14. Nice to meet you for the first time Callum!
I too am a mechanical engineering major! I wonder if we have ever had classes together? I would presume so since some are only offered once a semester for all the mech-e classes. I also love star wars and lord of the rings! My favorite star wars movie is the attack of the clones. The way they really added to the plot was amazing.

  15. Hey Cal. I finally read your intro; I actually learned some new stuff. I didn't know you were getting into metal, that's pretty sweet (although you did tell me you were listening to pink floyd). I also hadn't heard of Broken Bells or Kishi Bashi, so I'll have to check those out. Who am I kidding, I only listen to Linkin Park. So, uh, I guess it was good to meet you?

  16. Hello!
Loved the joke at the beginning of your introduction. Blink 182 is definitely one of my favorite bands due to my brother. Are you a fan of Incubus or Better Than Ezra? My brother introduced me to those bands and I ended up falling in love with them too. Arizona is a beautiful state! I visited briefly when my family made a road trip to California. I hope this semester is going well for you so far!

  17. Hi Callum! Although it's the eighth week of class, I am still finding and meeting new people in this class. I really enjoyed your humor in your introduction - I hope you can utilize that in your writing! I also love almost any type of music. Blink 182 and Third Eye Blind are two of my favorite bands. Also, I love Hamilton! I wasn't expecting to like it as much as I do, especially because history is not my strong suit, but it is brilliantly composed and written! Hope your semester is going well.

  18. Hey Callum! It is so cool that you are a Mechanical Engineering major!! My roommate is getting his degree in that and I don't know how you guys do it. It is way too much math for me. Also, I'm with you on the National Championship for the Sooners. It has been so long since we have won one. I also like how your dogs have "R" names. Bring unity to the family, I would think. Thanks for sharing!

  19. Hey there Callum! Nice to meet you! Good introduction you have there look better than mine. It really cool that your major is Mechanical Engineering major because I heard that it a really hard major to complete. My major is Management Information System (MIS) little bit of both computer and business. Also congratulations on finishing up your last semester! I am a senior to but got one more semester to go.

  20. Callum,

I am SO glad there are people in the world who are fascinated by things like AC systems because if the world was full of people like me we’d have lots of art and no air conditioning or working cars. :P Also, hahaha nice pun.
I love the IT Crowd! Have you ever seen Black Books? That’s my favorite British comedy for SURE.
    Have fun in Europe!

  21. Hey Callum!
Excellent taste in books and movies! I too grew up with Star Wars and Tolkien, so I can definitely relate. The Last Jedi was not my absolute favorite Star Wars movie, but I understand why it is yours. I also grew up reading Redwall but completely forgot about it until you mentioned it! Definitely a deja vu moment.

  22. Hello Callum!

I have watch Star Wars but I am not crazy fan about Star Wars. I really like to watch movies and have fun. The AC system really are complicated, I watch my dad fixing AC through looking on YouTube and ordering the parts that he thing is gone out but sometime it just does not work. Most of the time it works and I never know how he fix it. I hope you are having a good semester.

  23. Hi Callum. This comment is going to be very Star Wars-heavy so get ready. I love Star Wars and grew up on it as well, my parents showed me the original trilogy when I was a baby and the Phantom Menace was one of my first movie theater experiences! I love to find other people who love Star Wars haha it's so cool. As for the Last Jedi, I really enjoyed it for the most part, even though it really divided the fanbase. It wasn't a perfect movie, but I still think it was an amazing installment to the franchise. Other than Star Wars, I think we have almost the same music taste too, my dad and I listened to classic rock a ton when I was a kid, and that made me love it to this day.

Well, this was a lot different than most of my blog comments but I enjoyed it. Good luck on graduating, maybe I'll see you at the Han Solo movie haha!

  24. Hi Callum! I'm from Myth-Folklore. I don't know why, but it seems hilarious that there is a class dedicated to AC systems. I am honestly amazed. Also, you have pretty great taste in music (although I like rap in addition to the things you listed). I hope you have a nice time when you eventually get to move to Pheonix. I heard it is hella hot.

  25. Hey Callum!
I really like the design and layout of your blog and I feel like incorporating personal photos into your introduction was a nice touch! Also, I think our dogs Ruby and Rohan look so adorable just hanging out in the grass! I hope you are having a great semester so far and I can’t wait to explore the rest of your blog!

  26. Hi Callum! Learning about how air conditioning works and how to optimize it sounds really interesting to me, but I'm an engineering major, too. Taking a month to travel Europe would be an incredible experience! I've only been there once. I took a cruise to Denmark, Norway, Iceland, and the UK. It was incredible, and I highly recommend all of those countries, especially Iceland, when you go on your trip.

  27. Hey there, Callum! I just looked over your introduction post on your blog, “Indian Epics”. I really like that you shared quite a bit about yourself in the introduction. I believe that it is important for the reader to know some things about the author so that when they are reading their works they can better understand why they write in the manner that they do. Great job!

  28. Hi, Callum! I am a big fan of Tolkien as well. I love all of the bands you listed! I am a music major so I love hearing what other people like to listen to. Congrats on making it to the end of your schooling!! I am sure it is a big relief. Best of luck on finals and life after graduation.

Week 7 Story: Demon Days

Long ago, in the land of Midor, there lived a humble man by the name of Shakiro. He was a simple man, and he led a simple life. One day, when Shakiro was wandering about the forest, searching for food, he encountered a a creature that had become trapped by some kind of strange apparatus. When he approached the odd creature, he was surprised to hear the creature speak to him! "Hello there, human. I was trapped here, unable to escape my bindings without assistance from a human... I don't imagine you'd be willing to help, so just run away now like the rest of your kind." This perplexed Shakiro, as he couldn't figure out why the creature would just assume he wouldn't help out. If Shakiro was anything, he was generous! He looked the creature up and down and decided he seemed harmless enough. "I will not run away!" Exclaimed Shakiro, "I'm going to free you, my friend." He took care to break the chains that held the creatu
